Types and Styles of Bangers

0 comments / Posted on Feb 21, 2019 by High Roller Smoke

The world of concentrate consumption is always growing and changing so it can be hard to keep up. The introduction of concentrates to the marijuana industry formed an opportunity for the glass industry to build something new. This led to the Dab Rig’s creation, and to the most important tool the banger. Bangers, or as some call them nails, are an essential component of any dabber’s inventory. They are most commonly made of quartz but can be made with ceramic or titanium. Quartz bangers or nails are the preferred method because they heat up three times faster than either ceramic bangers/nails or titanium bangers/nails. The quartz nail or banger also provides a smoother tastier hit. Ceramic or titanium has also been known to emit harmful gasses compared to quartz. It is important that one of these materials is used to make the banger as it will need to withstand extreme heat in order to function without breaking.

All bangers come with either male or female joints. This describes whether the end of the banger that connects to your rig is designed to go into the female joint or go over the male joint of the rig. The banger’s joint will come in the three standard sizes 10mm, 14mm, and 18mm. There can also be different thicknesses to the quartz, but the most common are 2mm and 4mm.

Because there are so many styles and types on the market, we have created this guide to help everyone understand the terminology and each piece’s unique function. The hyperlinks throughout the guide will take you to the page of our website where you can purchase them yourself. Let us know in the comment section which is your favorite, or if there is a style you would like us to add!

Carb Caps: While a carb cap may not be a banger it is still included in this list because you can’t use a banger properly without one. Carb caps come in all different sizes and shapes, but they are all used for covering the banger while reducing the airflow. It creates more flavor and keeps the vapor from leaving the banger until your ready to inhale it!

90° Banger: This describes the angle of the neck of the banger. It most closely resembles a 90-degree angle. The quartz will usually come in either 2mm or 4mm thickness. This is the most standard of all the bangers.

45° Banger: This describes the angle of the neck of the banger. It most closely resembles a 45-degree angle. The quartz will usually come in either 2mm or 4mm thickness. This design is mostly used to convert bongs, with joints that will not fit right with a 90°, into oil rigs.

Flat Top Banger: This describes the style of the top opening of the banger. Standard bangers come with a slant whereas flat tops create a flat opening so carb caps can rest easier on the lid. These can also have thick bottoms that absorb more heat to stay hotter longer.

Flat Top Insert: This describes an insert that can be placed inside a flat top banger that allows for easier cleaning and more indirect heat. If the concentrate is placed in the insert than when it comes time to clean your piece you can simply remove the insert and soak it in iso. The most popular sizes are 25mm and 30mm in diameter.

Terp Slurper: This describes a banger with a lower cup on the bottom with openings. Your extract is placed from the top against the walls, and because of the design when you pull air through it causes the concentrate to “slurp” up the banger then slide back down into the cup section.

Terp Cycler: This describes a very unique banger that cycles the oil through the banger. There is a specially designed insert to create more surface area to vaporizes the extract that sits at the base of the banger. Once concentrate is placed into the insert it will melt down through it until it slips into the loop attached that cycles the extract back to the top of the insert which starts the process over again.

Bubble Bottom: This describes how the bottom of the banger is rounded instead of flat. The round shape is designed to allow the concentrate to melt down to a single point instead of collecting on the flat surface which spreads it out.

Core Reactor: This describes a banger with a solid thick quartz cylinder in the center. This creates more quartz for heat retention and gives a larger surface area to come in contract with the extract. The “core” can have heat reactive color changing crystals added inside to help better gauge the temperature level.

Thermal Banger: This describes a banger with two levels of walls. This creates a separation between the flame and the quartz which helps for lower temp dabs. It also helps stop the flow of extract from going down the neck into your piece. Heat reactive color changing crystals can be added to help better gauge the temperature level.

Bell-Shaped Flare: This describes a shape made famous in the industry by Evan Shore which flares out at the bottom making it harder to pull through the neck and gives a larger surface on the bottom for heat retention.

Heat Reactive Color Changing Crystals: These crystals are added to certain banger nails to help gauge the temperature level of the quartz. The crystals change color from yellow to red depending on how much heat is applied. The visual effect is fun to watch and will help you find that perfect temp dab.

Quartz Balls: These balls are added to create more surface area for heat to come into contact with the extract. With the addition of a directional air flow carb cap the balls are spun in circles inside the banger.

The Best Quartz Bangers for November 2019

This year has been filled with a ton of new banger designs and upgrades, it was only right that we had to redo our rankings for the best quartz banger of 2019. Since the release of thermal banger from Puking Beagle, the dab nail game has taken off. Fast forward to today, now we have flat buckets, opaque, bottoms, quartz inserts, dab pearls, and some other wicked banger designs that you have got to see.

Here are the best quartz bangers of 2019:

1. Terp Pearls with Spin Cap

This terp pearl with spinning cap combo is the latest in dabbing and one of the most advanced ways of smoking today. when these little “pearls” are coupled with a directional carb cap, the balls spin around the banger and agitate the oil so you don’t need to manually pick up and spin/adjust the carb cap to redirect airflow in order to achieve a thorough vaporization.

2. Opaque Bottom Banger

The Opaque quartz banger, the banger of the future. The thick, opaque bottom banger is designed to change color when hot to give you a much better idea of when to take your dab by seeing exactly how how it is. Made with 100% quality quartz, this indestructible piece takes just a few seconds to heat and can hold heat for up to 60 seconds!

3. Beveled Edge Banger

I’m sure you could guess what’s so great about this banger. As the name suggests, it features a beveled edge around the rim to create a much better seal with the bubble cap. I think this style will get more popular as it is still very new but we love how firmly the cap sits on the bucket.

4. Thermal Banger

The Thermal Banger with Bubble Cap is still a wonderful experience as it reaches all the puddles. This banger is highly effective when it comes to the huge dabs that fill up the entire cup. Watch as the directed airflow vaporizes the oil with minimal heat loss.

5. Splash Guard Banger

This is one of the newest entries on the list, the splash guard banger. This will keep the oil from climbing straight up and spilling into your rig. So far it seems to be gaining praise from the dab community.

6. Core Reactor Banger

The Core Reactor is one of the newer quartz nails that is prevailing with the dab community. This nail from AFM features a flat top design but also has an extra solid piece of quartz a.k.a. the core at the bottom of the dish. This will retain the heat much longer as the crank cap pushes air all around the core moving the puddles around and vaporizing every bit of oil.

7. Original Quartz Banger

The quartz banger is still the king of quartz nails and it remains the king. With so many different carb cap options, the glass banger is always a prime choice. Above we have one of the most popular and effective carb caps the directional airflow carb cap.

8. Terp Slurp Banger

The Terp Slurper Banger with the 25mm bubble cap is a great bundle for a good time. As a favorite in the dab nail market, this banger features a design unlike any other quartz banger on the market today and provides you with the best flavor possible from your concentrates. The design ensures that all of your waxes and oils are vaporized and it all drips bottom dish and the airflow slits in the bottom dish which allows air to push your wax back into the main part of the terp slurper banger to be vaporized. Add this to your next sesh and you will be the life of the party.

9. Cold Start Banger

The cold start banger is gaining traction, and seems like a great idea. We are still trying to figure this one out, but as cold start dabs get popular this will surely be climbing the ranks.

10. Diamond Knot Loop Banger

Heres to some serious innovation, the diamond knot loop banger is a 3 piece quartz nail. It includes the banger, a removable glass knot coil, and a cap with an extended tip. Our suggested cap is the honeybee bubble cap from Empire. This design is incredible for those who like to take enormous dabs, the oil will continuously recycle through the knot coil for a perfect hit with minimal waste.
