The Best Ways To Smoke Weed Without Rolling Papers

Many people like to smoke joints. Many others don’t. Thankfully, there are numerous ways that you can get high without rolling papers. Not only can you use traditional methods like pipes or bongs, but you can also get creative and make your own smoking devices out of household items.

Contents:

Joints have long been an iconic part of marijuana culture. Many people love them for their simplicity, their convenience, and their flavour. However, situations may arise where smoking papers are not available. Moreover, some people don’t like to smoke joints because of the prospect of smoking paper. Others simply prefer to consume marijuana via other methods that may be more enjoyable or convenient for them. Whatever the reason, there is a wide range of alternative methods you can use to get high. Here is a list of some of the most well-known alternatives to rolling papers.

VAPORIZERS

Vaporizers have become one of the most common ways to consume marijuana products. Dry herbs, oils, waxes, distillates, and other concentrates like shatter or budder can all be converted into vapour and inhaled.

Vaporizers are not only flexible in their usage, but are also a significantly healthier alternative to smoking. This is because marijuana vapour contains far fewer toxins and carcinogens than marijuana smoke. Vaporizers were first invented as a healthier method of consuming tobacco, but have evolved into one of the safest, most convenient, and most enjoyable ways to consume marijuana.

Vaporizers function best at temperatures ranging from 140–205°C (285–400°F). Temperatures outside of this range risk leaving behind cannabinoids or burning them into smoke. Be sure to grind your weed before vaping to make sure it gets completely and evenly vaporised.

Vaporizers come in many varieties. Whether you are looking to vape at home or on-the-go, there are a wide range of options and price points to choose from. Some types of vaporizers, like vape pens, for example, have become very popular, and consequently very expensive.

Lastly, not all vaporizers are built to last. Disposable vape pens or cartridges are now sold in dispensaries all across North America. These vaporizers utilise simple, small, and cheap batteries instead of complex heating units. They are typically sold as a package with some type of concentrate like oil or THC distillate. Once the attached concentrate is all vaped up, the pen is then expected to be tossed out.

PIPES

Pipes come in all shapes and sizes. They can also be made from any number of materials including glass, metal, wood, and clay. Different materials produce slightly different-tasting smoke, so many people have preferences when it comes to pipes. Pipes are very convenient because they are typically very easy to carry and use.

In order for materials to burn evenly in a pipe, they must be finely ground up beforehand. If the pipe has a carb hole on the side, make sure to cover it while lighting your herb and release it when inhaling.

If you have the right materials, pipes can even be made at home if necessary. Read on to find out how you can make pipes out of items like apples, corn husks, and water bottles.

BONGS

Many people prefer smoking weed out of bongs because they can get you very high, very quickly. Not only do bongs get you way higher than joints, but they are much more convenient since they save you the time of having to roll a joint. The only real negative with bongs is that they require water in order to function properly. This can be a problem if water is not readily available, or if water spills out of the bong.

Bongs can be made out of all kinds of materials including glass, metal, plastic, ceramic, and even certain kinds of wood like bamboo. They can also come in many different designs including carburetor bongs, percolator bongs, multi-chambered bongs, straight-tube bongs, beaker-shaped bongs, and gravity bongs.

GRAVITY BONGS

Gravity bongs are named for the technique they use to produce smoke. They are sometimes also known as water bongs, although they are essentially the same thing. Gravity bongs can be made out of a wide range of accessible materials like watermelons, pumpkins, milk jugs, and paint buckets. Essentially, to make a water bong, you will need a container that can hold water, and a plastic bottle that can hold smoke.

To make and use a gravity bong, follow these steps:

  1. Cut the plastic bottle in half.
  2. Cover the mouth hole with aluminium foil. Mould it into the shape of a bowl.
  3. Poke holes in the foil for airflow.
  4. Fill the container up with water.
  5. Place the bottle in the container with the mouthpiece above the waterline.
  6. Place weed on the foil and light it.
  7. Pull the bottle upwards while lighting to fill it with smoke.
  8. Push the bottle downwards into the water as you inhale so as to force the smoke upwards into your lungs.

BUBBLER

Bubblers are like a mix between a pipe and a bong. In a sense, they are the best of both worlds. Small enough to be conveniently handled like a pipe, but built to get you as high as a bong. Bubblers are typically made of glass and have a round chamber either on the bottom or on the side. The chamber is filled with water, and the weed goes in the bowl. If you are looking to try something different, or if you are looking for a more portable version of your bong, check out a bubbler.

ALTERNATIVE ROLLING OPTIONS

If you find yourself without rolling papers, don’t forget that other paper-based materials can work as substitutes. Items such as cigarette papers, gum wrappers, and even the Yellow Pages can be used as a substitute for regular rolling papers. The paper used in phone books is very thin and very similar to regular rolling papers. The thinness of the paper will also help to easily bind it shut with saliva, just like you would with regular papers. Although cigarette papers are typically thicker, gum wrappers are similarly very thin and brittle.

When it comes to using alternative papers, just be sure to handle them carefully to avoid tears. Additionally, be careful when inserting filters as it is possible to accidentally tear the paper with them.

HOOKAH PIPES

The term hookah is derived from the Urdu word “huqqa”, meaning “pipe”. These types of smoking devices originated on the Indian subcontinent and quickly spread across the Ottoman empire. As they became a wildly popular method of smoking tobacco, these kinds of tools spread into Europe and Asia. Smoking marijuana out of a hookah pipe may seem somewhat complicated, but it is not.

To do so, you will need a hookah pipe, coals, aluminium foil, tongs, water, and, if desired, shisha to mix with. If you decide to mix your weed with shisha or tobacco, place it on the bottom, with the cannabis on top. This will provide some moisture for the weed so that it does not dry out during the smoking process.

The hookah method is also very effective with hashish. Just remember to handle the coals with care and to not tug on the mouthpiece so the pipe does not fall over.

DAB RIGS

Dab rigs allow you to consume extremely potent cannabis extracts like shatter, honeycomb, and budder. In essence, dab rigs use a flash vaporisation method to process concentrates. In order to achieve this, you have to use a blowtorch instead of a lighter. The advantage to using dab rigs is, of course, how high they can get you. Because the extracts that dab rigs process are extremely potent, they arguably get you higher than any other method on this page.

Many people believe that dabbing is a healthier method of consuming marijuana than smoking, as it usually does not involve combustion. This makes the resulting vapour more “pure” than regular cannabis smoke.

APPLES

Apple pipes are a fun and convenient way to smoke cannabis. Apples are one of the most popular and accessible fruits in the world, and can be very easily converted into smoking devices. All you need to make an apple pipe is an apple, a pen, and maybe some aluminium foil.

Before you begin, make sure to choose a fresh apple that will not fall apart. You will be poking holes into it, so it must hold up. Additionally, pen substitutes like pen caps, pencils, or strong straws can be used, but are not recommended.

To make and use an apple pipe, follow these steps:

  1. Jam the pen into the apple to create a tunnel from the top (stem) to the middle/bottom of the apple.
  2. Use the pen to create another tunnel into the side of the apple. This tunnel should connect to the middle one, providing unrestricted airflow.
  3. Line the natural mould of the apple where the stem came out with aluminium foil to act as a bowl.
  4. Poke holes in the aluminium foil to allow for airflow.
  5. Place your weed on top of the aluminium foil, light, and pull through the side hole.
  6. Some people prefer to carve a third tunnel on the other side of the apple to function as a carb. This is possible, but not at all necessary.

CORN HUSK

Corn husks have become very popular among health-conscious smokers. In Jamaica and California, corn husks are regularly used as alternatives to rolling papers or other devices. Since husks are all-natural, this is considered to be one of the healthiest methods of smoking cannabis.

After being dried, corn husks are simple to roll up. Additionally, they are fibrous, meaning they can be tightly secured to hold marijuana inside and will smoke slowly like papers. If you’re looking for a fun, healthy, and creative way to smoke marijuana, give dried corn husks a try.

HOT KNIVES

The hot knife method is one of the oldest known ways of smoking cannabis or hashish. All you need are one or two knives and a heating element. If using a stove, turn it on medium heat and place the steel knives over the burner. This will allow them to heat up and make the weed stick to them. When the knives are hot enough, place a piece of bud on one, and squeeze it with the other. Inhale the marijuana as it begins to smoke.

When handling hot knives, be careful not to burn yourself on their handles. When they touch marijuana, it will immediately begin to produce smoke, so be ready to inhale.

Some minor modifications can be made to the method if preferred. Some people prefer to cut a plastic bottle in half and use that as a suction tool. A cardboard paper towel roll can also be used. Additionally, some people choose to omit the knives altogether and place their marijuana directly onto the heating element using a sheet of foil. This method works just as well, but provides equally less control over the direction of the smoke (not to mention the risk of burning your face), making the use of a cardboard roll or cut-up plastic bottle a must.

PLASTIC LUNG

Plastic lungs are not just easy to make, but will also get you extremely high. Lungs mimic the same airflow functionality as bongs. In order to make a plastic lung, you will need a plastic container like a 2l bottle, scissors, aluminium foil, tape, and a plastic bag. 2l bottles tend to work very well, however, you can also use a 4l container if you wish.

To make and use a lung, follow these steps:

  1. Cut the plastic container in half.
  2. Use the tape to attach the plastic bag to the bottom of the container, sealing it.
  3. Place aluminium foil on the mouthpiece of the container. Mould into a bowl shape.
  4. Poke holes in the foil.
  5. Place marijuana on top of the foil.
  6. Pull on the bag as you light the weed, creating suction.
  7. When the bag is full, lift off the foil and inhale.

When making a lung, the capacity of the container will depend on the size of the bag used. As such, the larger the bag, the more smoke that the lung will hold, and the higher you will get.

SODA CAN

Smoking marijuana from a soda can is just about as juvenile as it gets. A “do-it-yourself” favourite among new smokers, soda cans can easily be converted into smoking devices. Simply bend the can in half, poke some holes into the new crease, and poke a carb hole in the side. Put your weed inside the crease, light it, and inhale through the mouthpiece.

While soda cans work as smoking devices, many people worry about possible negative health effects. The aluminium that the can is made of may not be as safe to smoke from as aluminium foil. Additionally, the ink on the can may release chemicals when heated. As such, even though the method works, it should be used sparingly.

Conversely, some people actually prefer smoking out of a soda can. Proponents claim that your high can be enhanced by the residual sugar and caffeine molecules in the can. Unsurprisingly, there is no research to confirm these claims.

WATER BOTTLE

Similarly to cans and 2l containers, plastic water bottles can be retrofitted into smoking tools. Just poke a hole in the side of the bottle, place some aluminium foil on the mouth piece (in the shape of a bowl), poke some holes in the foil, and voila! You have yourself a water bottle pipe. Some prefer to make the hole in the bottom of the bottle, but really anywhere works. Water bottle pipes can be frustrating to use as they require being held at a somewhat weird angle during use. As such, be careful not to accidentally knock your weed out of the bowl when lighting up.

ROSE BLUNTS

Rose blunts are not commonly talked about when it comes to alternative smoking methods. Yet, many people claim that they are just as effective as any method of consuming cannabis. In order to prepare a rose blunt, you will need just 3 rose petals and a working oven.

To prepare the blunt, preheat the oven to broil and set aside 3 rose petals. When the oven is hot enough, place them on a pan inside the oven for about 10 seconds. Take the pan out, lick the rose petals, and stick them together to make a blunt wrap. Place them back in the oven for another 10 seconds. Remember to not let them get too dry or crispy as that could cause problems when rolling. Simply pull them out of the oven, let them cool down for a moment, and roll yourself a rose blunt.

There are lots of ways to get high without rolling papers. Check out this list of alternative methods ranging from glass bongs to DIY apple pipes.

23 Best Ways to Smoke Weed (How & What You can Use)

There are a ton of different ways to consume weed that you may not have heard of, but today let’s take a look at smoking. What can you use to smoke weed? We’ll tell you, here are 23 different ways to smoke weed that you may not be familiar with.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

1. Vaporizer (Likely the Healthiest Way to Smoke Weed)

Today, dry vaping is thought of as one of the healthiest ways to smoke weed. You can try a portable herb vaporizer or you can use the tabletop versions which include inhaling a vapor filled plastic bag, allowing you to inhale at your own pace. Keep your devices clean with pipe cleaners and rubbing alcohol. Like vaping but looking for increased potency? Decarb the cannabis then vape at a low temperature to keep the flavors crisp.

2. Bong

Bongs are a type of water pipe that can be made out of glass, plastic, ceramic, silicone, and more. Grind up your cannabis plant material. Add water to your bong and pack a few pinches of cannabis evenly in the bowl. Light it, and slowly start milking it, before clearing the whole chamber. Bong’s are great for high potency smoking but may be too much for beginners.

3. Vaporizer Pens

There are many vape pen options, making vaporizing weed or concentrates ultra convenient. First, charge the battery portion in full. Then, depending on the unit, either add your plant material or concentrate, and get stoned. Some pens may be able to do flower or concentrates while some come with attachments that allow you to go seamlessly back and forth between the two.

4. Joint

You can roll a joint or spliff with rolling papers, some hemp CBD flower or regular THC flower, and a filter (sometimes called a crutch). Grind your weed and place the filter on the right or left side of the rolling paper with the glue facing you. Place your bud from the filter to the end, and start tucking and rolling your paper. When you get close to the top, lick the glue and seal the joint. Pinch and roll the top before lighting. If you find this process a bit too challenging, you can purchase pre-rolled cones, and stuff them with ground cannabis instead.

5. Soda Can

The soda can, like the apple pipe, is sometimes one of the first smoking devices utilized by new smokers, because you can find the materials in practically every home, and they cost next to nothing. First, flatten the can a bit, and remove the pop tab from the mouthpiece. Using a screwdriver, make a hole in the side of the can, which will act as the carb. Then, using a pin, poke a series of small holes close together in the top of the can, place your cannabis on top of those holes, light it, and inhale through the mouthpiece. The soda can is a discreet smoking method because it be disposed of after use; however, the inside of the can is lined with a coating that can contain dangerous carcinogens, which should not be inhaled. Maybe stick to the apple method, next time, just to be safe.

6. Gravity Bong

The gravity bong is a DIY favorite. This water bong can be created using a 2 liter plastic bottle and a large bucket. Simply cut the bottom off of the 2 liter bottle and fill the bucket with water. Then, put a glass bowl piece, or a piece of aluminum foil with some holes in it, on the mouthpiece portion of the bottle. Submerge the bottom of the 2 liter in the bucket, leaving the mouthpiece in the air, and pack and light the bowl. As it’s being lit, begin to slowly lift the bottle from the water, remove the bowl/foil, and place your mouth over it. Begin to inhale while slowly submerging the bottle back into the bucket.

7. Tinfoil

It’s possible to make a bowl out of tin foil, though it isn’t particularly healthy to use. In emergency situations, fold a square of tinfoil in half twice. Roll the 4-layer aluminum foil into a cone shape, and crease the side opposite your mouthpiece about an inch from the end. Fold it upwards and shape it into a bowl. Add a screen as a filter, or simply pack your cannabis in the bowl and puff away. Dispose of after use.

8. Bubbler

Bubblers use water and a percolator system to create clean hits, basically, like a mini sized bong and bowl combo. Fill the bubbler with a bit of cold water, cover the carb, and enjoy smooth pulls. There are even bubblers smaller in size, designed to filter joints, making the hits even richer.

9. Blunt

When it comes to blunts, you’ve got options. The easiest to roll is a blunt wrap, which you can find in most smoke shops, along with their popular, harder-to-roll counterparts. Depending on your material of choice, you must first either crack the cigar down the center, or unroll it. Then, carefully run it under water for a few seconds, pat dry with a paper towel, and roll, licking it sealed. For those who want to stay away from tobacco there are numerous hemp blunt wraps that keep nicotine completely out of the picture.

10. One Hitter

The one hitter is a perfect tool for those who only need a hit or two before going about their active lives. It’s a small pipe that can be quickly packed with a pinch of bud, lit, and emptied. Go extra incognito with a one hitter with a subtle orange bit on the end, designed to look just like a cigarette, for your discreet, on-the-go needs.

11. Chalice

A chalice is a water pipe commonly used in the Rastafarian religion. The pipe is usually made out of a coconut or other natural container, and is used spiritually to reflect on important issues surrounding the world and the self. Grind your cannabis and place it in the cone-shaped “kutchie.” Put a small bit of water over top, and thoroughly light your bowl before taking a deep hit.

12. Bowl

A bowl is a small glass pipe. This pipe has a carb, or hole, placed to the left or right of it. Place your thumb over it while taking your hit, and release it just before your inhale to clear the chamber. Bowls make for great collectible glass pieces due to their size and portability.

13. Wooden Pipe/Hand Pipes

Yes, you technically can use a wooden tobacco pipe to smoke marijuana. If you are already a tobacco smoker, you may have a better experience if you mix your ground cannabis with a bit of tobacco, and although there are no carbs on these pipes, they do work if you’re in a pinch and there’s nothing else available.

14. Gas Mask

A gas mask can be attached to the end of a bong for a novel and popular way to basically… hot box yourself. Fill the bong with water and add your ground cannabis to the bowl. Put the gas mask over your face with the mouthpiece in place, and attach your mask to the bong. Once you clear the chamber, the mask will begin filling with smoke, and you can continue to inhale and exhale as needed. When you’re done, simply loosen the gas mask and revel in the psychoactive effects.

15. Hookahs

When smoking weed out of a hookah, or shisha pipe, sharing with friends is easy as the coals keep the bud lit. To use a hookah fill the base with water, attach your hose and pack the ceramic bowl with layers of shisha tobacco between layers of ground cannabis. Place a piece of tin foil tightly over the bowl and poke multiple holes through it with a toothpick, then secure your bowl on the pipe, and place hot coals over top.

16. Dabbing

Dabbing has become one of the most common ways to consume cannabis extract over the past few years. To dab, you’ll need a dab rig, a blowtorch filled with butane, a carb cap, dab tool, and the concentrate of your choice (ie: BHO (hash oil), shatter, or live rosin if you’re fancy). There are also plenty of devices on the market making the process simpler, including e-rigs that let you leave the flame torch in the past. A lesser known but much more pleasant option than traditional dabbing is to decarb the concentrates first. This allows you to take low temp, easy-on-the-throat puffs while increasing potency.

17. Steamroller

A steamroller is usually a long, glass, dry pipe notorious for its strong throat hits. Think of it as a water-less bong. Unlike most bowls, the carb sits at the end of the long pipe, and while you inhale, the smoke has the time to cool before hitting your mouth. The steamroller is a better option for advanced smokers, due to the harshness of the hits.

18. Hot Knives

Most popular in New Zealand, a method called hot knives, or “spotting,” is performed when the ends of two (butter) knives are heated on an electric burner. The heated knives are placed between a bud, and the smoke that comes off the bud is quickly inhaled. This is more common when smoking hash on its own, which is traditionally mixed with tobacco when using other methods such as a joint.

19. Corn Husk

Starting with a piece of unhusked corn, peel it, and let the husks sit out to dry. Grind the buds, and cut down a dried husk to about the shape and size of a paper or piece of fronto leaf. Use a crutch or glass tip, if desired, and roll it as you would a joint or blunt.

20. Plastic Lung

Also known as the aqua lung, or a waterfall bong, this method is used to smoke marijuana using just a 2 liter bottle and a metal pipe bowl or glass bong stem. Punch a hole into the bottle around one inch from the bottom, and cover it with electrical tape. Fill your bottle up with water about 4/5 of the way, and place your bong stem inside the mouthpiece. Light the cannabis continually using a hemp wick and remove the electrical tape at the same time. Allow the waterfall bong to drain into a bucket or sink, and inhale what remains from the mouthpiece.

21. Water Bottle

Again, not the healthiest option, but an option nonetheless. Find a standard water bottle and remove the label and cap. Put a piece of aluminum foil over the mouthpiece and use a toothpick to poke a few holes through it. Pack it. Fill the bottle 1/4 of the way with water, and punch a hole through the side, about three inches above the water. Put your mouth over the hole, light the bud, and inhale.

22. Rose Blunts

Rose blunts are the stoner way to say I love you. Wash your rose petals and lay them out with the round side facing upwards on a baking sheet. Place in the broiler for 12 seconds. Remove from oven, and lick the petals together as if you’re making an extended joint. Three petals is sufficient. Place your attached petals to broil for another 12 seconds. Roll as you would a joint or blunt, and finally, place back in the oven for another 10 seconds to seal.

23. E-Cigarette with Cartridges

Cartridge vape pens have made smoking cannabis more discreet than ever before, which probably explains their recent rise in popularity. They are vaped on a re-chargable (or disposable) battery, and gets you high with very little residual smell. If using pods, we can’t recommend strongly enough that you purchase them from sources you trust, ideally with testing results provided. Although very convenient, there is still much testing to be done on what adverse effect they may have on the human body.

Additional ways to smoke weed

There are even more ways to smoke such as:
