Pax 2 vs. Crafty Vaporizer Comparison
Posted by Affiliate Namaste on September 17, 2015
So lets talk a little about comparing the two of the most popular vaporizers on the market today. We are very often asked which is the best portable vaporizer and simply put, there is no right answer! These top units are actually quite different and you should really thing about what you’re looking for before making your choice.
We have on one hand the new Pax 2 which is the latest version of the very famous Pax portable vaporizer by Ploom. The Pax 2 is the small, stealthy and sexy. It features beautiful lines like a sports car and a shiny high quality aluminum finish. The Pax 2 is very portable and discrete (when needed). Presently the Pax 2 is the best selling portable vaporizer at NamasteVapes™.
The Crafty is a new portable vaporizer made by Storz & Bickel who are famous for the original Volcano vaporizer. The Crafty and its larger brother the Mighty were released more recently and offer the absolute best vapor production in comparison with any other portable vaporizer. These units have a unique style about them and may not be considered as stealthy or portable as a Pax 2 but their performance is superior.
Lets take a look at some of the key differences between the Pax 2 and the Crafty vaporizers.
Size and Portability
In comparing these two units it is very clear that the Pax 2 is smaller and more discrete than the Crafty. The Pax 2 weighs in at only 92 grams and is 18.5mm x 8.6mm x 10mm. This is about 30% smaller than the original Pax. This means the Pax 2 can fit almost anywhere. The Pax 2 has a very nice brushed aluminum surface on the outside and the among other upgrades from the Pax 1 includes a standard flat mouthpiece.
The Crafty is actually itself quite small for a portable vaporizer especially for a pure convection based unit and can also easily fit in the pocket. The Mighty is basically the exact same unit as the crafty except that it is larger with twice the battery life and instead of temperature controls via an online app, it has a digital display screen on the front.
The Crafty’s dimensions are 11.0 x 5.7 x 3.3 cm and it weights approximately 135 grams. So although the Pax 2 is ultra small and stealthy, the Crafty itself is also very portable for on the go use.
Function (Conduction vs. Convection)
Aside from size, the biggest difference between these two units which has an affect on the performance and flavor of each is the method of vaporization used.
The Pax 2 although very advanced in terms of the ‘bells and whistles’ uses a more basic method of vaporizing dry herbs which is called conduction. This is a very common method used among many portable vaporizers and is favored by some. Conduction vaporizers work by heating your dry herbs inside of an oven.
The oven reaches temperatures that are maintained below the combustion point of the herbs. This then creates vapor that flows through the stem of the unit and out the mouthpiece in the top. So the system itself is quite simple. Conduction vaporizers as a result of the ‘baking’ of the herbs often result in a more toasted flavor than convection based units.
Pax 2 Conduction Oven
The Mighty vaporizer uses convection to create the vapor which results in a cleaner flavor more closely matching the flavor of the herbs themselves as they are not continuously baked inside of an oven. Convection based vaporizers like the Mighty, the Crafty and the Firefly work by having hot air passed through the herbs in order to extract the vapor from the materials.
With a true convection vaporizer your herbs are never in direct contact with the heating element. With many convection vaporizers, the speed of your draw (inhale) will have an effect on the thickness of the vapor. (There are huge differences between Conduction and Convection Vaporizers, contributing to very different vaping experiences.)This happens because as you draw slower, the air has longer to heat over the element before passing through your herbs. Drawing faster the air has less time to heat which results in a lighter, less dense vapor.

What is really amazing about the Crafty and the Mighty, from my experience is that you get amazing performance with a nice and thick vapor whether you draw slow or fast. How they achieve this may be a secret but is really in my opinion what sets the Crafty apart from its competition in terms of vapor production, even compared with the Pax 2!
Charging and Battery Life
The Pax 2 has a really cool charging cradle where the vaporizer lies flat and is held in place through magnetic force and charges through a USB port. This has changed from the Pax 1 design which had the vaporizer upside down on top of a charging stand that required connection to a mains power supply.
So charging with the Pax 2 has become more convenient with the USB powered cradle and a charge time from empty up to three hours. The battery life of the Pax 2 on a full charge is approximately 90 minutes (30% improvement on the original Pax). This gives a decent amount of use on a single charge.
Pax 2 Charging Dock
The Crafty vaporizer features a Li-Ion battery that takes approximately two hours to charge (via supplied USB cable) and the battery on full charge will last about 45 minutes before it shuts itself off. The one and only downside in my opinion of such an amazing portable vaporizer is the battery life. It’s really amazing how quickly that 45 minutes of use gets consumed with this vaporizer and it can be frustrating as well when starting a session for the unit to shut off.
If you like the Crafty and want better battery life we recommend using the Crafty Power bank which can hold 2 full charges of battery life and works with ‘pass through’ charging so you can use the Crafty while connected to the power bank. The other option of course is the Mighty which is more expensive (and larger) but features twice the battery life of the Crafty.
When it comes to performance and vapor production there is no competition. The Crafty offers far superior performance in comparison with the Pax 2 and is a lot more efficient in evenly extracting vapor from your herbs. The result of the pure convection based Crafty is a powerful and flavorful vapor that is not affected by your draw speed.
Because the Crafty uses convection you also don’t have to fully pack the chamber like you do with the Pax 2 in order to get good results. Many conduction vaporizers require you to fully pack the chamber to get decent vapor quality which some may view as a waste of materials.
Please don’t get me wrong, the Pax 2 really is an amazing vaporizer it performs very well and is still our best selling vaporizer for a reason but it is not as efficient as the Crafty and in choosing which is right for you, its important to consider factors like size, portability, ease of use as well as performance.
Both the Crafty and the Pax 2 are very high quality units. The Crafty is manufactured in Germany by Storz & Bickel who have a track record of producing only the best quality products on the market and the Crafty is no different.
The Pax 2 as well is extremely high quality which is backed up by the manufacturers amazing 10-Year warranty. The Pax 2 has substantial improvements from the original Pax which we expect will mean even fewer returns but you should be comfortable knowing that your Pax 2 is very good quality and supported by one of the best warranties in the industry.
The Pax 2 and the Crafty are both industry leading vaporizers. They both offer some of the most advanced technology we’ve seen to date from ‘lip-sensing’ technology in the Pax 2 to smart-phone app integration apps with the Crafty and advanced vaporization methods.
If you’re stuck deciding between the Pax 2 and the Crafty what it really comes down to is personal taste in the style of the Pax 2 being very slick and sexy which excellent vapor production, or the Crafty which still being portable but maybe not as slick but offering the best vapor production out of any portable units.
If I had no choice but to pick, I would buy a Crafty over a Pax 2 because of the performance but I would much prefer to have both!
