Firefly 2+ Review & Vaporizer Tutorial
Today we’re taking a look at the Firefly 2+ vaporizer. It’s the third vaporizer that Firefly’s released and their best yet, I’ve been really loving it.
- Great design
- Comfortable to chill with
- Outstanding vapor
- Instant heat up
- Easy to clean
- Works with concentrates
- Quick-charging dock
Typical Price: $249.99
- Mediocre battery life
- Need to stir bowls
- Interface isn’t great
I would recommend it to anybody looking to get into vaporizing and anybody with a cheaper vaporizer that wants to step up a little bit. It not only looks good, but the vapor you get out of it is fantastic. If the battery life was a little better, I think this would be a contender for best vaporizer in the world.
I’m going to show you:
In the Box
Here’s what’s included when you open up the box:
1 x Firefly 2+ vaporizer
1 x USB charging cable
1 x Charging dock
1 x Concentrate pad
Firefly 2+ vs. Firefly 2
The original Firefly 2 was a good vaporizer but it was a little bit tricky to use because you needed to learn how to use it and take long draws with it. The Firefly 2+ is much easier to use; the herb doesn’t need to be ground as fine.
There’s also a 33% increase in airflow and it’s easier to draw from, so that’s definitely an improvement. The battery was improved a bit, but also it doesn’t include a second battery that the Firefly 2 had.
It also has a lower price point. This goes for a much cheaper cost than the original Firefly 2 which I think was needed because the Firefly 2 was a little bit expensive, so this is actually a bit more of an affordable unit.
Firefly 2+ Review
First off, the first good thing I think is that the design is outstanding. It looks really sexy and sleek. This looks like something that you could put on your table in the family room or a TV room and you would have no problem having it sitting there. Most people want something that blends in, and the Firefly 2+ does exactly that.
The colour choices are also great. You can choose from Jet Black, Zebra Wood, Blue, Gold, Oak and Black. Not exactly sure why they included two versions of black but there are!
✅ Comfortable to chill with
Second good thing about the Firefly 2+ that I’ve really been enjoying is that it’s very comfortable to chill with. I love just sitting down on the couch packing a bowl and then just getting to work on it. It’s a really great vaporizer for just hanging around the house with.
✅ Outstanding vapor
Since the Firefly 2+ is fully convection you can pull some great tasting, big hits from it. I think it provides the best vapor quality for its size. It’s also much easier to get big pulls than using the original Firefly 2.
✅ Instant heat up
It also has instant heat up, so that means almost right away, after you click the two buttons, it starts lighting up. Then once it’s lit up completely then you can just draw in. That means you can also use it for micro-dosing if you just want to take one puff at a time.
✅ Easy to clean
Cleaning the Firefly 2+ is a breeze and it’s one of the easiest vaporizers to maintain on the market. Keep scrolling to see exact instructions on cleaning the unit, but it doesn’t take much. just a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol.
✅ Works with concentrates
Sixth thing that’s very good about the Firefly 2+ is that it works well with concentrates. I lost my concentrate pad already so I need to replace it, but it works really well with concentrates, I tested that quite a bit. After using it with concentrates, I lost it—I guess that’s what happens haha!
✅ Quick charging dock
And the last good thing about the Firefly 2+ is it has a quick-charging dock. Just like the Firefly 2, it just slides right in and then it gets to 80% battery in 20 minutes, which is actually very fast. You don’t need to wait for hours for it to charge. It doesn’t have pass-through charging like other vaporizers, like the Mighty, but with charging that goes up to 80% in 20 minutes, that’s actually awesome.
❌ Mediocre battery life
I think the battery life is just average. I get about four or five sessions out of it, I definitely would want it to be longer so I don’t have to worry about charging it as much. But with the charging dock, it makes it super simple to charge it, so you just remember to put it in the dock. It depends on your use case, but if you’re taking this on longer trips, you definitely need a second battery before you have to charge it.
❌ Stirring bowls
You also need to stir the bowl midway through a session and it doesn’t come with a stir tool. Halfway through, you just want to mix it up to make sure that you get all of the herb in the chamber, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing if you have a stirring tool close by, but it’s definitely not easy to use. It’s not like the Ghost MV1 where you don’t need to stir it at all and it heats through the bowl completely.
❌ Interface isn’t great
I think the third thing that I don’t necessarily like is that it’s not completely intuitive to use and change the temperature. To change the temperature, you just need to play with the side buttons.. it’s not hard but it’s not simple. You don’t know what temperature you’re at, or what the battery life is, without the app.
⚠️ A note on the app
Apple took the app off the iPhone store so you can’t actually use the app for Apple devices (you still can on Android devices). Not that I liked apps anyway; I think apps aren’t necessary for vaporizers, I just think it’s something that you don’t really need. You should be able to change the temperature and check the battery life directly on the unit itself.
How to use the Firefly 2+
Let’s show you how the Firefly 2+ works:
You just pop off the lid and get some ground herb, put it in there. You can pack the bowl pretty tight, don’t tamp it down, just let some airflow in there and then toss on the lid again.
Then when you hold the two side buttons, you’ll see it glow green.
Then it’ll go solid green and the inside of the bowl will turn orange, and then you’re pretty much ready to go. Like I said, instant heat up.
Then you can just hit some more bowls, stir it up a little bit once you use that up and that’s all you need to do to use it.
- Take the lid off.
- Put some ground herb in the bowl.
- Put the lid back on.
- Hold the two side buttons.
- Ready when indicator turns green and bowl glows orange.
Changing the temperature of the Firefly 2+
Hold the button on the right side and then press the left side three times, and then you’ll see it goes red. Then you just press the left side up to six times to change the temperature setting. Each tap makes it go up to another temperature.
You really don’t need more than six temperature settings. It lets you go from a light heat all the way up to concentrate mode.
How to clean the Firefly 2+
Cleaning out the Firefly 2+ is very easy, it’s one of the easiest vaporizers to clean and maintain. All you need is some rubbing alcohol and some Q-tips. Here are the basic cleaning instructions:
- Pour some rubbing alcohol into a bowl.
- Open the vaporizer up.
- Dip a Q-tip in the rubbing alcohol.
- Clean the lid and also the main unit.
After you do that let it dry off before you use it again!
Wrapping it up
Overall, I’ve been loving the Firefly 2+ vaporizer. It not only looks good, but the vapor you get out of it is fantastic. If the battery life was a little bit better, I think this would be a contender for best vaporizer in the world.
I do think I would choose this over the Ghost MV1 right now because it’s just less finicky.
I would recommend it to anybody looking to get into vaporizing and anybody with kind of a cheaper vaporizer that wants to step up a little bit. The Firefly 2+ Review: A Needed Improvement!
The Firefly 2 gets an upgrade: better air flow, $80 price drop, new logo, and a “+” added to the.
**The Firefly 2+ vaporizer has some features only accessible via a smartphone app. On November 15th, 2019, Apple removed all vaporizer apps from its store. Apps that were downloaded before removal will still work. Android users are not affected. Please read our blog post to learn more about the app removal, and how it affects specific vaporizers.**
The Firefly 2 just got an upgrade, including better air flow, an $80 price drop, a new logo, and a “+” added to the name. At $249.95, the new Firefly 2+ is an affordable, connoisseur vaporizer that fits in any pocket, with instant, great tasting vapor anywhere.
Chances are, any marketing you see for the Firefly 2+ will tout great taste as a big reason to buy one, and they’re right. It tastes fantastic. Whether it’s herbs or concentrates, the gentle, convection heat and pure air path deliver amazing taste. You’ll taste flavors in your herbs that never show up in conduction vaporizers, and with a little practice, you can have sessions that taste great all the way through.
Vape at your own pace
Another strong reason to consider the Firefly 2 Plus is the instant heat up time. Once packed, you can take a full draw from a cold start in 20 seconds and drop it back in your pocket for later. No other vape on the market gets you in and out of a hit quicker, and you can take as long as you want to finish it off, without waste between hits.
Still a tight draw
The Firefly 2 suffered from a very restricted air flow that made you work for it, a lot like getting that first sip from a thick milkshake. Firefly claims they’ve improved the air flow by 33% this time around, and you can tell with side-by-side comparisons. The draw on the Firefly 2+ feels more natural now, but is still slightly on the restricted side of the scale.
Hit it their way
Every hit on the Firefly 2+ is designed to be 15 to 30 seconds long, and it works perfectly with the right draw speed. The first six or seven seconds are flavorful, as it gently ramps up to your set temperature, before it starts to push out thicker vapor. Our testers that preferred short sips of vapor, like a Pax or Starry, lengthened their draws to find their sweet spot. The heavy hitters had to slow their draws before it got uncomfortable. If you like a slow, 10 to 15 second draw (or longer), the Firefly 2+ should be right down your alley.
The occasional stir
The Firefly 2+ uses convection heating, so you’ll need to stir the herbs at least once or twice per session to get full extraction. How often you need to stir will be up to you. Our flavor chasers stirred after every hit, and the herbal taste lasted a long time. Otherwise, we stirred after the vapor stopped, or every three or four hits. Getting to the bowl is easy enough – just pop off the lid. But there’s nothing included to stir with, and if you open it up in the wind you could see your herbs blown all over the place. Our best solution was to use a metal stir tool that stuck to the outside of the magnetic cover, so we could stir anywhere without using our fingers.
Simple but awkward interface
With one light and two touch-sensitive buttons, the Firefly 2+ is simple to use, but expect to pick up the manual before you tweak anything. Touch both buttons at the same time to activate the heating, and start your draw three seconds later. If you want to change the temperature, you’ll have to either connect the smartphone app, or pick up the instructions and learn the button commands. Out of the box, it is set to 400°F, with a total of seven on-board temperatures to choose from, including 500°F for concentrates.
The two-button-press keeps the Firefly 2+ from heating up unintentionally in your pocket, but feels a little awkward to hit, unless you’re used to smoking from a Sherlock-style pipe. You cradle the vape in one hand while pressing the buttons, and the mouthpiece’s flat shape forces you to hold it flat, never sideways. You can use the app to make the Firefly 2+ fire with only one button, but then it’s easier to accidentally turn on.
Helpful smartphone app
**On November 15th, 2019, Apple removed all vaporizing apps from its store, including this Firefly app. It might not be permanent, but we are planning on an extended absence. The Firefly 2+ works fine on its own, but can’t be customized with the app on an iPhone, unless it was downloaded before November 15th. Android users still have access to the app.**
Technically, you don’t need the smartphone app, since the on-board temperature controls range from 320°F to 420°F (in 20 degree increments) for herb, with a 500°F setting for concentrates. But the app widens the temperature scale all the way down to 200°F in 10 degree increments, adds a few nice features, and fast-tracks you to the help videos. You can change the button press configuration, toggle between Fahrenheit and Celsius scales, and fine tune the heating so you can juice it all the way up to an “11”.
Ready for concentrates
The Firefly 2+ comes with a stainless steel concentrate pad already installed in the bowl, ready to go. Just add a small amount of concentrate to the center of the pad, change the temperature to 500℉, and let her rip. You’ll take a few cigar-style puffs to melt the concentrate into the pad, but hit it normally after that. The hits are drawn out over a session at your pace, instead of a single concentrated hit, and are some of the tastiest around. It’s rare that a vaporizer works equally well with herbs and concentrates, and the Firefly 2+ does it better than most.
Average battery life and a quick-charging dock
On-demand vaporizers are tricky to nail down when it comes to battery life. Your mileage will vary depending on the temperatures used, and how hard and long you draw. On average, you can expect to get around six bowls, with five to seven hits per bowl. Overall, it feels like typical battery life for a vaporizer, and recharging is quicker than normal. The usb-C dock fully charges the battery in 45 minutes, and up to 80% in just 20 minutes. If it’s completely dead, you can throw it on the charger and have enough power for a bowl in as little as ten minutes.
Frequent, but easy cleaning and maintenance
Cleaning the Firefly 2+ is incredibly easy. Just open the lid and wipe down the bowl and glass. The only other thing to do is check the mouthpiece screen for clogs. The downside is that convection vaporizers are finicky, and do best with more regular cleaning. You’ll clean it a little more often than other vapes, but not enough to be a pain. If you consider yourself a neat freak, you’ll appreciate how easy it is to get the Firefly 2+ back to sparkling new.
Small and classy
Firefly vaporizers have always had a classy elegance to them, and this one is no different. It’s barely larger than a Pax 3, so it’s very pocketable, with smooth lines and gentle curves that tell you it’s something different, but doesn’t scream vaporizer. It’s the kind of vape that makes you want to relax into a mindful session.

For best results
The Firefly 2+ is a full convection vaporizer, and works best if you pay attention to your draw speed, maintenance, and herb pack. Here are some tips to get you started off right.
The Firefly 2+ has a 15 second hit timer, and you’ll get thicker draws if you can pull the entire time. Draws less than ten seconds risk feeling weak.
Check the mouthpiece screen for clogs. It’s easy to forget about this one, since it’s far away from the herbs.
Pay attention to how you pack the bowl with herbs. Use a coarse to medium grind. Fine grinds will flow out of the bowl and clog the screen. Pack the bowl full, so the hot air doesn’t move the herbs to the side and flow right by.
Who is the Firefly 2+ for?
The Firefly 2+ is built for the vapor connoisseur who prizes great flavor anywhere, anytime, whether it’s dry herbs or concentrate. It’s also a strong contender if you’re trying to conserve your herbs, since the on-demand heating wastes nothing between hits. It’s not difficult to use, but you’ll benefit from a little time spent dialing in your preferred technique. The Firefly 2+ is a vape we want to grab at the end of a long day, when we want to have a relaxing session, and feel a little special.
Who is the Firefly 2+ not for?
If you don’t care much about taste, you’ll probably get something less expensive and easier to use. There are better vapes out there if you just want to tear through a lot of herbs. Some people will complain about the stirring, but anyone who wants a convection vaporizer should be prepared to stir.
Without a doubt, the Firefly 2+ is a connoisseur’s vape. The taste is up there with the best of them, and the new, lower price slides in below most other top-shelf vaporizers. The more open air flow is a definite, needed improvement, but will that and the lower price point turn this one into a hit?
