Spencer’s Versus Hot Topic
By Andrew Martin
In Project Space I decided to compare Spencer’s and Hot Topic, they are both large companies that sell the similar products. Luckily they are both located in the same mall in Northridge at 9301 Tampa Avenue, Northridge, CA 91324, is made it very easy to be able to view both stores relatively quickly. I have made visual observations about both stores, and my conclusions have lead me to believe that Spencer’s is a store more suited for people who like to party. Spencer’s was originally a mail-order catalog; selling items like The Whoopie Cushions and lava lamps; the targeted demographic is 18-24 year old. In 1963 Spencer’s expanded its reach and opened its first store in the Cherry Hill Mall in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Since then they have grown to over 600 stores nationwide. The first Hot Topic store was opened in 1988 by Orv Madden, who retired as CEO in 2000 and was replaced by Betsy McLaughlin, who operated the company until 2011. The current CEO is Lisa Harper. Hot Topic is a good place for people who like music influenced clothing. Approximately 30% of Hot Topic’s revenue comes from sales of licensed band t-shirts. Hot Topic has 642 stores as of April 2012. I have come to believe this from things like: their products, atmosphere, and people who shop there.
I like to go to the mall a lot during my free time after school, I usually go to the same store in the mall, including Spencer’s and Hot Topic. When I go to Spencer’s I will find products that are very different. Their products range from belts to cups to knick-knacks. One item that supports my theory that Spencer’s is more of a party store is that they sell beer bongs. It is basically a funnel that is connected to a hose at the bottom, you fill the funnel and hose with beer, and then someone puts their mouth of the other end of the hose. They open the valve at the bottom of the hose, and gravity pushes the beer down forcing you to drink very quickly. Another selection that they sell is lingerie. Along with lingerie they sell personal vibrators for women.
At Hot Topic they don’t really have anything that would compare to that of Spencer’s products. The two stores do have similar products like gauges, T-shirts, wallets, and stuffed animals, but only Spencer’s has lingerie and vibrators. Hot Topic’s products are more based around music and pop culture.
In Spencer’s there store is based around partying and the party lifestyle. Usually Spencer’s is a small store, not a lot of room but has a lot of merchandise out for sell. Spencer’s is usually a square shaped shop where all the merchandise is around the registers with are in the middle. Since most of the merchandise is on the walls they are able to display it most of the way up. The outside of the shop is designed to look like a red brick wall. It is made to look like a laid back “cool” place.
Hot Topic is a place designed to look like a gothic sanctum. At most of the Hot Topics the merchandise envelopes the cash register, that is in the middle. The have a large wall display of the all band T-shirts. Here they are able to play any kind of music that they want to play, from rap, rock, reggae, metal, and scremo. There clothing is usually very different than what you might find at a typical clothing store. They are usually odd colors, skinny jeans, and trend clothing from the 90’s to 2012. They like to follow things like Invader Zim, Adventure Time, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and many more different trends.
The people that go to Spencer’s typical are people who like to party. They know that Spencer’s is a place that has loss of fun items suited for their lifestyle. As i previously mentioned, the merchandise and atmosphere directs who will be attracted to the store. Since the store sells things like beer bonds, lingerie, and beer pong tables. The material a store sells will define the people who come to it and buy their products. If this didn’t happen people would not buy their products and the store would go under, bankrupt and they would go out of business.
The same application that goes for Spencer’s goes for Hot Topic, and poetry much all stores. Since Hot Topic sells different merchandise they attract a different type of person. They do sell some similar products, but not everything is toe to toe. For example: a beer bong (sold only at Spencer’s) would not go against a pair of pants (only at Hot Topic). Someone who wants to party would go for the beer bong over the pants 90% of the time.
How it many be apparently true that Spencer’s, Hot Topic is better for people who like to dressi in clothing that is more cultural. Since Hot Topic is more of a clothing store is it a better store to shop for clothing. They sell just about everything that you would need to dresses yourself. There main clothing selling point would be there band T-shirts. They have a large selection of band shirts form, 80’s metal, metalcore, deathcore, pop, and rock. At Spencer’s they have a selection of T-shirts but mostly form the 90’s.
In conclusion, Spencer’s is a place that is better suited for a person who likes to party and like to live that type of life style. Hot Topic is a place that is better suited for people who are looking for clothing. Spencer’s is a better for people who like to party because of the merchandise, the athmosphere, and the other people who shop there. Perhaps people who want to party could buy their clothing at Hot Topic.
