broken downstem stuck in bong

Downstem stuck to bong, help!

Bongs are arguably one of the greatest innovations of mankind as they actually have the capacity of accentuating the beautiful high that marijuana provides. These bongs have been around for thousands of years now and are currently available in an array of different sizes and shapes. Each bong is unique in its own perspective but currently the most popular choice for stoners are Glass on Glass bongs.

These bongs have the same iconic shape with the underlining difference of a pull out slider, which is also known as a downstem. These bongs normally do not have any toke holes and they are considered to be the foremost choice for stoners who don’t want to spend an extravagant amount of money on bongs.

However, there is one slight drawback with these bongs, which is the fact that the downstem can get stuck to the bong. This normally happens due to wear and tear, but can also occur if you do not clean your bong regularly. The mere sight of the downstem getting stuck inside the bong will send shivers down any stoner’s spine as they cannot use their bong any more. Imagine having beautiful buds laying around but not being able to use your bong because the downstem decided to ruin your existence, rest assured we are here to help.

Given below are certain expert tips that we have articulated using years of experience and dedication.

Try using ice cold water

This is one of the easiest ways of getting the downstem out of the bong. The cold water will come in contact with the components present in the glass and this will make it easier for you to pull the downstem out of the bong. Do not try pulling the downstem out using a wrench or a different tool as there is a chance you might break the bong. Try using your fingers but if that’s not possible, use tweezers as this will reduce the chances of you manhandling the bong.

Try using alcohol

If cold water does not do the trick, try removing the stuck downstem by rubbing alcohol. Simply pour the alcohol down the tube and use tweezers to pull out the downstem. If you cannot get a firm grip, consider using a tooth pick. Simply work around the downstem until you feel it has started to loosen up. You can also use WD40 instead of rubbing alcohol if you are having trouble finding it in the market.

Try using Goo Gone

Finally you can also detach the downstem from the bong by using goo gone. There are two reasons why the downstem gets stuck in the tube; this is either because of the buildup of residue or because of bad luck. Using goo gone will clear any residue that has accumulated in the tube and will make it easier to pull the downstem out of the tube.

Do not empty the entire bottle of goo gone in your bong, simply add a little so that you can use a toothpick or something else to detach the downstem.

There SHOULD be a rubber seal around the stem, between the stem and the bong wall. If not, then the glass may have jammed together, and that shit can stick really tight when jammed.

It’s a pain in the ass sometimes to get the stem back in with the rubber piece on it, so your friend (or someone) probably didn’t know any better and just jammed it in.

At least that how my JBDs work.

Try soaking the entire thing in alcohol over night. Cover it at least to the top of the joint. That should dissolve all the resin in there. Wiggle the joint occasionally.

we had it upside down soaking in 71% isopropyl but nothing, should we go for it again using 91% or what, i was thinking of boiling water, the bong weighs like 5 pounds its a heavy piece so i think it can take it

“There was a dirty rainbow coming out of the fucking toilet” – 40 Oz.

try hooking two wires onto the inside and pulling? lol i dunno.

I did like the “because it’s *bold*Glass on Glass*endbold* response.

Twist that sucker and slowly tug on it little by little. Probably would be easier if you poured hot water on it or got it warm before you tried it so the resin will loosen up. I can’t imagine it being that hard though.

edit- That is if the down stem is fully intact, you should have something to grip onto unless the stem is broken inside, in which case I have no clue. Thinking about it more I guess that’s what you meant. Still, getting it warm is a good start.

I was able to get my downstem unstuck (which was stuck to the base for over a year) with ease, and I’ll tell you how. First of all this happened because there was water between the two glass tubes, not because of resin. When there is water between glass, it acts as a glue. Water has higher adhesive forces (between water and glass) than cohesive forces (between water molecules) which causes capillary action and creates that meniscus in test tubes. In the bong, water between the downstem and the base pulls both pieces closer together and with great force. Thats why it gets stuck.

To remove fused glass, here is what you should do:

1) crush ice and fill the bong with it (a third of the way up the shaft)
2) fill the downstem with ice as well (not too tightly packed but not really lose either)
3) now place the bong in a pot of really hot water and keep it there for about 1 or 2 minutes
4) while holding the bong in hot water, gently tap the downstem with another piece of glass (any glass item works. Wine glass is a bad idea because its really thin and might break)
5) after about 2 to 3 minutes, shake and twist the downstem. It should come off easily.

The mechanism behind this is like so: the ice on the inside is in contact with the downstem and the cold temperature makes it contract. The hot water on the outside expands the glass base. This creates space between the two glass pieces, making it ridiculously easy to separate them.

as the title shows, my friends downstem is stuck to his bong, we’ve cleaned it with salt and 91% isopropyl and still nothing. what trick will get this downstem out?? ]]>
